Robert Colgate ventured with Ralph Maher, to manufacture soaps and candles. William also used to help them. But after two years, the venture got dissolved. The family had to suffer a lot.

At the age of 16, William decided to leave the house to work.  He worked with small firms for a few years. Then in the year 1804, he moved to New York City. There he worked in a soap boiler. He used to watch, the employer practicing the method during the process of soap manufacturing and noting every mistakes and mismanagement for his guidance. He worked for a few years.

The company had to suffer a huge loss. After getting the proper treatment and consultation, he again joined the company and took it to a new benchmark.  He was a very religious person. He firmly believed that whatever he had is by god grace. So, he asked his accountant to open an account in the name of God in which he used to give God the tenth from the earnings he made. He donated this amount as a charity for the welfare of society and people. As he started gaining more profit in the business also increased the amount of charity by 50 percent.

William followed the goal of prosperity throughout his life. After a few years, he became one of the rich men in New York City. He took his last breath on 25th March 1857. After his death, his three sons Robert, Samuel, and James took the charge and led the company in the field of oral hygienic.
